John Powell's primary areas of practice are trusts and estates and business law.  John has practiced law in Denver for nearly 25 years and really enjoys being able to help his clients succeed and accomplish their goals.  

In his career, John has done estate planning for almost every conceivable kind of client, including pro bono work for the disadvantaged, working families, owners of small businesses, wealthy investors and even NBA players. During this time, he had gained much insight into the estate planning process. In the creation of a client's estate plan he has developed an approach which includes making certain the client understands the issues and the choices that are available to deal with those issues.  And finally, the ramification of those choices.  

Today's estate planning goes far beyond simply creating a will to divide someone's property after they die. In our complex world, thoughts must be given to medical issues at life's end, the deceased’s wishes on issues such as resuscitation, organ donation and treatment postmortem.  

Financial issues can be very important in such areas as minimizing or eliminating estate taxes; providing for continuation of a family business; avoiding giving an heir a substantial amount of money before the heir is prepared to use it responsibly; keeping the client's funds safe from the claims of an heir's creditors; and avoiding or minimizing family discord.  John is experienced in each of these areas and can provide a sense of trust that they have been properly attended to prior to the need arising.  John can bring his litigation experience to bear if necessary in probate litigation when heirs or other parties find themselves in dispute.

John had years of business experience prior to becoming an attorney.  He worked at residential and commercial lenders as well as real estate investment companies. John has a deep background in lending and real estate.  He also has many years of business law offering services to all types of companies from start-ups to large corporations. Matters have included long-term representation and advisement on just about any type of business issue to transactional work on real estate and financing deals.  John has also litigated numerous commercial matters.  

John also has extensive experience in international business matters, including the creation of sophisticated asset protection structures.  

Away from the law, John enjoys spending time with his wife Debbie and his community involvements have included leadership positions with, Historic Denver, Inc., The Denver Firefighters Museum and Colfax on the Hill.  An avid story-teller, John will happily recount numerous anecdotes, including from his time spent in Brazil as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
